The function of the IDZ is to conduct research relevant to the practice of dentistry and to provide scientific advice in relation to the policy of the German dental profession within the respective fields of competence of the above two organizations.
The IDZ is not only concerned with general issues within the broader context of research on the provision of care ("going the last mile" in the healthcare system), but also undertakes research on health economics and comparative studies of international healthcare systems.
The results of the Institute's research and other scientific activities are presented in its publication series: the Materialienreihe, the Broschürenreihe and the special volumes known as Sonderbände. The Institute also publishes a free newsletter, IDZ Information, which appears at irregular intervals and contains concise reports on further research topics of current interest.
The IDZ is a member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für
Sozialmedizin und Prävention [German Society of Social Medicine and
Prevention], the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Zahn-, Mund- und
Kieferheilkunde [German Society of Dental Oral and Craniomandibular Sciences]
and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und

Within the IDZ, the Zentrum Zahnärztlicher Qualität (ZZQ) (Agency for Quality in Dentistry) operates as an autonomous unit.
